Bristol Coalition Spotlight – People Inc & The Point in Time Count

Once a month the BRHA is proud to host the Bristol Coalition, a group of 31+ partnering organizations with the shared mission of supporting residents of the greater Bristol area.

This collective allows us to share resources and ideas, enabling us to build a more resilient community.

February Spotlight

In February, the Coalition heard from two presenters, Betty Segal with People Inc. and Kent Berryman of Anthem HealthKeepers. You will find more information about Anthem HealthKeepers and the 2024 Medicaid Open Enrollment Period in the February Partner Spotlight.

People Inc. Point in Time Count 2024

Betty Segal of People Inc. is part of the team to spearhead the yearly Point in Time Count for Bristol, Virginia, as part of the Cumberland Plateau Local Planning Group. Cumberland Plateau Local Planning Group is one of 12 rural area groups that comprise the Balance of State Continuum of Care, a local planning body responsible for coordinating all homelessness services in a geographic area. Cumberland Plateau covers the geographic areas of the City of Bristol (VA), Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, Tazewell, and Washington counties.

The Point in Time Count is an annual effort led by HUD to estimate the number of individuals without safe, stable housing. The count documents the number of those experiencing homelessness in a community. Point In Time Counts are important because they establish the dimensions of the problem of homelessness and help policy makers and program administrators track progress toward the goal of ending homelessness. As part of this yearly process, an annual Housing Inventory Count documents the residential resources dedicated to assisting people experiencing homelessness.

This year, the Point in Time Count occurred January 24th, one of the coldest days of winter. Volunteers canvased the areas where individuals may be found including shelters, encampments, and streets to conduct surveys with individuals who appear to be experiencing either sheltered or unsheltered homelessness.

The results of the 2024 have not been published yet. Here are the 2023 results.
