The Southeast Regional Council of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (SERC-NAHRO) recently held its annual Fall Workshop in Montgomery, Alabama where one of its sessions provided a discussion for small public housing authorities. Approximately 80% of the pubic housing authorities (PHAs) in the U.S. are small while they only have 20% of the housing stock and receive a mere 10% of the funds allocated for PHAs. Despite these percentages, small PHAs must comply with most of the same operating and reporting requirements as much larger agencies but with fewer resources. For this reason, it is important that small PHAs be able to network and communicate in order to advocate and to share limited resources. This SERC-NAHRO roundtable was led by a team that included BRHA Executive Director Lisa Porter, Tallapoosa, GA Executive Director Russell Nast, Marion, VA Executive Director Charles P. Harrington, and Augusta, GA Deputy Executive Director Doug Freeman.
