A Tip for Virginia Landlords

Virginia Statement of Tenant Rights and Responsibilities as of July 1, 2021
Beginning last year, July 1, 2020, all Virginia landlords must offer the Statement of Tenant Rights and Responsibilities form to prospective tenants before signing the lease.  The form was updated, July 1, 2021, and can be accessed on the Department of Housing and Community Development website, along with additional landlord and tenant resources.   The Virginia Residential Landlord and Tenant Act (VRLTA) provides legal protections to tenants and landlords. As a requirement under the VRLTA, Virginia landlords must offer future tenants a summary of their rights and responsibilities, known as the Statement of Tenant Rights and Responsibilities, created by the Department of Housing and Community Development. Upon entering a lease or rental agreement, both the landlord and tenants(s) must sign the form acknowledging that the landlord provided the tenant with the Statement of Tenant Rights and Responsibilities. A signed copy of the document and a copy of the written lease agreement must be delivered to the tenant within one month of the effective date of the rental agreement.   Review the Statement of Tenant Rights and Responsibilities form and include it in all new move-in files.
