The U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) has established new regulations which mandate that Housing Authorities nation-wide implement “Smoke-Free Public Housing”. This will affect all BRHA Residents, visitors, and staff. All property owned by BRHA, including BRHA-owned sidewalks and parking lots, will become “Smoke-Free” as of July 30, 2018.
Diana Carter, Vice President of Operations, accompanied by Mark Redman, Property Manager, and Resident Services Coordinators, Diana Farris, Lynn Pannell, and Julie McVey met with Residents of Stant Hall and Jones Manor on Tuesday, August 22nd to provide an overview, expectations and crucial timelines for the new “Smoke-Free” housing rule. To maximize opportunities for residents’ questions and input, additional informational meetings are being planned to answer questions and hear concerns.
The decision to stop smoking altogether is solely up to the Resident, but is strongly encouraged for health reasons. Smoking cessation classes and other supportive resources will be offered to Residents as we transition into this new policy initiative.
A draft “Smoke-Free Housing” policy is currently being developed with an anticipated January 2018 release for review and comment. Residents will have to comply with new regulations after 7/30/18 to avoid possible lease violations that could result in being evicted. Our ultimate goal is to maintain a HAPPIER, HEALTHIER and SAFER environment for all BHRA Staff, Residents and their families.
