Growing Food in Public Housing

This is a shout-out to one of our prized community partners, Appalachian Sustainable Development. I just received a hard-copy of the first issue of a new newsletter they’ve begun. The Garden Box Newsletter has been “created to keep everyone connected within our Garden Box Community.” ASD Garden Box Newsletter 2016-08 pg1 crop

We at BRHA are so pleased to be part of that Community. ASD has implemented the Garden Box Project with our residents and has supported the development of raised bed gardens in two of our public housing communities.  The smiles that come from our residents, especially some of our older residents, getting their hands in the earth and growing vegetables and flowers, is a sight to behold. Go to this link for the Garden Box Project and you will see some of those smiling faces!

Our thanks to ASD for their work in the community to “grow food, communities and opportunities to build a thriving Appalachia,” and for including our residents their mission!
